Did you know that it is traditional to save the very top layer of your wedding cake to eat to celebrate your first anniversary? Sadly, even of the brides who know this, most end up throwing the cake away after a year in the freezer. There are ways to protect your beautiful cake, though, from the reception to the anniversary date!

Cake

Make sure that the caterer saves the top layer of the cake for you. Most of them should have enough experience to do so without your having to ask, but it never hurts to ask for what you want or need. From there, make sure that someone is designated to take the cake (along with the gifts and any flowers that you want to save) to a specific location for you. Otherwise you could end up dealing with your cake and other keepsakes being thrown away or forgotten as you take off for your honeymoon! Once you get your cake home, however, there is still the problem of keeping it edible and frost-free for a whole year.

For one thing, you can try a vacuum sealed cake saver like this one at Amazon. Keeping the air out will keep it from going stale. Sure, it’s tough trying to store something like that for a year, but that is just one of the joys of the first year of marriage, as someone who has tried to cram food in around a cake box can well attest. This is just one more reason to be thrilled when your anniversary arrives - a year with your new spouse, a yummy cake, and more room for new food!
